WHEN RAMADAN STARTS/ RAMADAN DATE
Ramadan 2020 is expected to begin on Thursday evening, 23rd April, 2020 (according to Saudi Arabia) and will end on Saturday, 23rd May, 2020. Eid ul Fitr 2020 is expected to be celebrated on Sunday 24th May, 2020. This is the tentative date as the actual date of commencement of Ramadan 2020 is subject to the sighting of the moon.
Ramadan is the ninth month* of the Muslim calendar.
The date of Ramadan in the Gregorian calendar moves forward about 11 days each year due to the different lengths of the Islamic and Gregorian years. It is during the month of Ramadan that Muslims fast.
WHAT IS RAMADAN?

The Fast of Ramadan
Millions of Muslims across the world observe fast from dawn till dusk during the whole month of Ramadan as this is the most sacred month for the whole Muslim Ummah.
The Fast of Ramadan 2020 lasts the entire month, which can be 29 or 30 days, depending on sightings of the moon.
during the Fast of Ramadan strict restraints are placed on the daily lives of Muslims. They are not allowed to eat or drink during the daylight hours. Smoking and sexual relations are also forbidden during fasting.
The holiday of Eid al-Fitr, which means "festival of breaking the fast", marks the end of Ramadan and the start of the next lunar month, Shawwal. This day is declared when the crescent new moon has been sighted or if sighting of the moon is not possible due to the weather.
Eid al-Fitr marks the completion of 30 days of fasting and is celebrated across the Islamic world with public holidays lasting for several days.

History of ramadan:
This religious holiday was established in the 7th century when the Quran was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. His revelation began in 610 CE in Mecca at Hira Cave on Mount Nur. This day has been known as Laylat al-Qadr – which means Night of Decree or Night of Power in English. As revealed by the hadith, all of the subsequent Holy Scriptures were written down this month by the Prophet Muhammad. Observance of Ramadan is mandatory as stated by the Quran, Surah 2, Ayah 185.
